Free Emergency Preparedness Workshop on June 16

Our hurricane season has begun — are you prepared? To help you get ready, the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) Services Coordinator, PJ Grier, and the Florida Emergency Preparedness NN/LM Coordinators have planned free workshops!

The Tallahassee workshop, from 11am – 2pm on Wednesday, June 16, 2010, will be held at the Florida State University College of Medicine. During the workshop (see more details on workshop content below), we will take a short break for lunch – bring your own “brown bag” or a few dollars for pizza.

The room reserved will depend on the number of attendees, so please RSVP in the next few days to susan.epstein@med.fsu.edu or 850-644-6683. Since parking on FSU’s campus is challenging, please also let Ms. Epstein know if you will be driving and she will do her best to obtain a parking pass for you.

Workshop Content:
1) Overview of the 10-step approach to service continuity- the focus is enabling libraries to maintain their information services to their patrons in the event of an emergency or disaster and includes information about developing basic personal safety procedures as well as how to get help to mitigate the damage to collections after a disaster. (50 min)
2) Table-top exercises which are designed to develop procedures for various types of disasters in your particular library. Think of it as a series of “what if” exercises. (50 min)
3) Discussion of Mutual Aid Agreements or Memorandums of Understanding – this is about having a library buddy agreement that is formalized and documented. What are your core services and if your library was out-of-commission, how could another library assist you? Would you need reference services? ILL services? Online access to resources? Etc. (50 min)
